Background of the Study

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a well-established, evidence-based psychotherapeutic approach effective in treating various mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. In psychiatric nursing, the integration of CBT techniques enhances patient outcomes by addressing maladaptive thought patterns and behaviors. Nurses trained in CBT can provide structured interventions that promote coping strategies and improve mental health.

In Nigeria, mental health services are evolving, with increasing recognition of the need for psychotherapeutic interventions alongside pharmacological treatments. The Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Enugu serves as a pivotal institution for mental health care in the southeastern region. Assessing the knowledge and practice of CBT among psychiatric nurses in this setting is crucial for identifying educational needs and enhancing therapeutic practices.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the proven efficacy of CBT, its application in clinical settings may be limited by various factors, including inadequate training, lack of resources, and insufficient institutional support. Preliminary observations suggest that psychiatric nurses at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu, may have varying levels of knowledge and practice regarding CBT techniques. This disparity could impact the quality of patient care and treatment outcomes. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate the current state of nurses' knowledge and practice of CBT to inform targeted interventions.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of knowledge of CBT techniques among psychiatric nurses at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu.

2. To evaluate the extent to which these nurses incorporate CBT techniques into their clinical practice.

3. To identify barriers hindering the effective application of CBT techniques in psychiatric nursing within the hospital.

Research Questions

1. What is the current level of knowledge of CBT techniques among psychiatric nurses at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu?

2. To what extent do these nurses apply CBT techniques in their clinical practice?

3. What are the perceived barriers to the effective implementation of CBT techniques in this setting?

Research Hypotheses

1. Psychiatric nurses at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu, possess adequate knowledge of CBT techniques.

2. There is a significant relationship between nurses' knowledge of CBT and their application of these techniques in clinical practice.

3. Identifiable barriers negatively affect the implementation of CBT techniques by psychiatric nurses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on registered psychiatric nurses employed at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires and interviews to assess knowledge levels, clinical practices, and perceived barriers related to CBT. Limitations may include self-reporting biases, the cross-sectional nature of the study, and the potential lack of generalizability beyond the study setting.
